There has obviously been a lot of discussion played out across the media in recent weeks around the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget on 30 October and what this may/may not include.
From a charity sector perspective, the Charity Finance Group has written to the Chancellor (on behalf of the Civil Society Group of charity infrastructure bodies) setting out what it wants Labour to deliver in its first budget. These requests include a range of “quick wins” i.e. measures that could be implemented quickly with low cost/impact such as increasing charity tax limits in line with inflation. At the same time it also urges launching a consultation on the introduction of VAT on charitable donations and donated goods. Further details here.
At the same time, this week also saw the Prime Minister announce launch of a new “covenant” between Government and the Voluntary sector, which will define how Government works with charities based on the principles of transparency, recognition, participation and partnership.
A positive start – let’s hope it continues in this vein!
Regards,
Donal Watkin
